Why do people seem to have to anounce they've decided to join the CoS?
The reasons people join the CoS are as various as the persons submitting the applications. This is also true for why one would announce the decision here, though there are some commonalities that those who make the announcement share. But before getting to them, I must address your conception about the CoS application and fee.
Quote:
"I've filled in the form and sent off my money." Well done! I've just renewed my subscription to the New Scientist. This involved filling in a form, and, yes you've guessed it, sending some money!
Do you believe this is an apt example, comparing a magazine subscription to CoS membership, or were you intentionally distorting the case to make your point? I suspect you believe the former, since you are not a CoS member. If I viewed membership as you do, I too would have little interest in the CoS.
Of course, I understand matters differently. As I wrote elsewhere, joining the CoS was foremost an act of personal fidelity with who and what I have been and forever will be. Most members would likely say something similar.
Quote:
Simply filling in a form and paying the money does not a Satanist make.
Of course not. But, again, the Satanist is not merely “filling in a form and paying the money” when he or she aligns with the CoS.
You question Darrell:
Quote:
Are you seeking approval? An open armed welcome to the fold? I just don't get it!
Those would be fair questions if he even hinted that this was his motive in casting his lot with the organization that best represents his interests.
But this is all that Darrell said:
Quote:
I just wanted to share that I just sent off my application for membership and paid my fee via paypal!
If his words betray a person seeking approval from us, or if they show someone wishing for a group hug, please tell me how you see this.
Darrell is free to speak for himself, but I suspect that he made this announcement because he feels good about his decision and believed that his announcement would be understood and appreciated by those who have made the same decision and felt as he does now.
If this is the case, Darrell is right in his conclusion, the only caveat being that some people here will here not understand his motives.
I mean no disrespect to you, Euphoria, but I would not be surprised if you still don’t get it. But I am glad that Darrell does.
Congratulations, sir.

Firstly let me say that my comments were not solely directed at Darrell, but at all those who have made the same sort of posts. Now to address your point; Quote:
Do you believe this is an apt example, comparing a magazine subscription to CoS membership, or were you intentionally distorting the case to make your point? I suspect you believe the former, since you are not a CoS member. If I viewed membership as you do, I too would have little interest in the CoS.
CoS membership and a magazine subscription are obviously not the same. The decision to join the CoS is something that should not be taken lightly, but it's the decision that is important, not the form filling and money paying. Now as I am yet to join, my view on this may differ, but when I do join, if I announce it anywhere, it will be 'downstairs' to those who'd want to know. I obviously don't know what goes on down there, but I would imagine there's an introduction procedure involved, much as there is up here (admittedly I've just reread my introduction and cringed!)
Just another small point, I know at least one other member of this forum who is a CoS member, but has chosen not to say! I have no idea why, but I'm sure they're not alone!
Joining the CoS is not an achievement! Anyone can do it. Being a Satanist is not an achievement; after all we're born not made! Living life to it's fullest, being a success at what you chose to do, seeing the world for what it really is, now those are achievements!!
As for me still not getting it; well maybe I don't. I feel no need to tell others what I already know about myself. Whether you are a Satanist or not, has nothing to do with if you are a paid up member of CoS, as others have said before. Does me not being a member make me less of a Satanist than you or anyone else?
Replies to posts like yours DarkWater, are, in my opinion, what this forum should be about! Debate, thought and discussion!

I fail to see how he is making a "hubaloo" about registered membership, it was a short and simple post to say "hi, i'm a member now". I made one myself when I received my card. Registered membership is something worth announcing, even if it is not something worth celebrating too much. Who didn't feel great receiving that little card in the post?

I totally agree with DemiGod. You have been on the forum since 10/24/05, maybe you are not at the point to making a commitment for yourself yet. But it seems that he has. So leave him be. HS Majik

It should be obvious that filling in the form is the first step to receiving the card. Personally, I chose not to celebrate sending off the form but if he wants to then nothing wrong with that.
Sending off the form isn't an achievement as such, but it is something to feel good about. I felt pretty good when I was standing in the post office with my application in hand, simply because I had been waiting for so long.

So he has actually recieved the Membership card then? Or has he simply filled in the forms and sent off the funds? I thought it was the latter, but pardon me if i'm wrong.
I'm not sure what you discern as a difference between the two. For some people, saving up the money is a huge accomplishment. And you may not be aware of it, but after sending your money, getting your membership card can take months, maybe he didn't feel like waiting until then.

I just think that celebrating sending off your application as opposed to becoming a member is a different thing altogether. Shout it from the rooftops when you become a CoS Member and i'll be the first to congratulate you. Otherwise it seems a tad over-reactive.
Satanists don't say, or not say things just because we want to please others. It's called individuality m'dear. That's part of what being a Satanist is all about. If announcing his registration makes his clock tick than I say let him.

I didn't realise that that your length of time on this forum had a bearing on how much of a Satanist you are! Hmmm....... so the 30 odd years of my life before joining this internet forum don't count?

I guess I see things differently than you do. I shall explain. I have a passion for Satanism, and all it represents. I get excited when I talk about Satanism. I become inspired when I gaze upon the Baphomet, as I see Satan and myself are one and the same. I wish this man and give this man all the respect that is his just due. I mean when a person reads and identifies with The Satanic Bible Should be call for celebration "I know I did." All IM saying here is, I think you are simply less as passionate about the issue than others which is more than obvious. I hope you do not take my reply as any kind of ill response, I just don't see the need to degrade someone on reaching a desired goal.

Darrell, you have taken an important step in YOUR life, congratulations! Now, if I may throw in my two cents into this debate as to whether this fine gentleman's announcement deserves "congratulations": I can understand the viewpoint that filling out a form and transferring funds in-and-of-itself can be a rather mundane task and is nothing special. However, (In my opinion) this is not really what Darell is announcing. The way I see it, this fine gentlemen is announcing that HE GETS IT, that he is not only taking the Devil's name, but GIVING HIM HIS DUE. He is saying that he is committed to the tenants of Satanism. Mr. Darrell did NOT just fill out a form. He made a conscious decision to commit to a set of values and gave a token offering proclaiming such. Once again, congratulations Darrell, I will see you "downstairs" shortly - thought it may seem like an eternity to you HAIL SATAN! False_Messiah78Citizen of the Infernal Empire

Well, having a pat on the back from other members of the CoS would mean something to me. I like a pat on the back from respected Satanists. Whats wrong with that. After all, they dont give you a pat on the back unless you deserve it anyway, so that just makes it more special. Quote:
