My little boy just spoke his first word. I was holding him and he said extremely clearly "daddy".
You cannot overestimate how proud I feel right now.

I find it amusing that when a child's parents are extremely happy and proud when they first speak, but can't wait for them to shut up when they get older.

That's wonderful! You must be so proud. My first word was "book," apparently. Awe-inspiring, but not heart-melting.

It's absolutely wonderful! It really feels great when the little devils start verbalizing. You don't have to do so much telepathy!  What a delight to see the mind of an individual develop! Just remember that when he starts repeating your own words back to you! Also, in case you hadn't already noticed, he undoubtedly understands far more words than you think he does.

Congratulations! I can imagine how happy and proud you are.  My mother told me my first word was mum.She felt excited and my father was disappointed.

Yes a proud moment indeed, my daughter's first word was "bottle" as in give me a bottle of milk !
I am generally referred to now as "daddy" or if I have been snoring in bed "the warthog !".
