I know it is said NOT to hurt another animal unless for food or self defense, but what if one should be employed by a farm or a slaughterhouse where the killing of an animal is in the job description? I was asked this the other day by a friend, and it has been bothering me for a while simply because I do not know the answer to this question.

The animals killed in the slaughterhouse are eaten aren't they?

I guess I should have worded it a bit differently. I was thinking something more along the lines of a mink farm or something similar where the animals are NOT usually there for food.

Aren't these minks made into coats for warmth?

I would assume so. I dont have too much information on the place right now but a friend of mine was talking about it to me and asking these types of questions and then even said he would offer me a job there until the farm I usually work on is back in season. I just figured I would ask this here and receive input from someone who should know more than me about it. Thank you very much for any advice and help in advance.

I answered the question about fur here.

If you are working at a place where animal slaughter is part of the business practice, then you are doing it for your living. Only you can decide if you wish to earn your living this way, or if there are other ways that offer a similar living while not creating pain and suffering for a non-human creature who does not seek or deserve it.

When it comes to farm-raised mink, it is hard to draw a distinction between this and farm-raised food animals, of which I do partake.

But when I see the kind of women who walk around in mink coats, there is definitely part of me that would enjoy telling them the fur looked better on the mink.

Personal choice. Make it, own it, live with it.
