Perhaps somebody has already posted about this and it's likely that alot of you know about it anyway, but I'm new and I havn't seen it mentioned yet. Sorry if i'm stating the obvious.

Over here in Britain there's a TV show called 'QI' (Quite Interesting) hosted by Stephen Fry. The idea is that celebrities are asked questions about subjects of general ignorance. Points are deducted for the most obvious and predictable answers.

During the last series one of the questions was 'What is the number of the beast?' (666 being the obvious and wrong answer). The oldest copy of the new testament (found quite recently I think) says that the number is actually 616. 616 had also been found in other copies but until now has been assumed to be a mistake.

I just think it's funny that 666 has been used for so long by devil worshippers and certain heavy metal bands. It's a credit to Mister Lavey that he has never acknowledged this number, and more less says it is wrong at the end of 'The Satanic Rituals'. Possibly he wrote this as to not make Satanism a mere inversion of christianity, but i think it's more likely that he knew 666 had no relevancy.

You're right that the number is irrelevant to Satanism. But it still pushes people's buttons so some Satanists use that fact to play with the herd's anxieties.

I myself don't see numbers of that sort to be relevant to anything besides superstition.

I was always under the impression that in The Unknown Known, Doktor was talking about folks like Richard Cavendish who claim Satan's number is "2".

Every multiple of 9 has digits that add up to a lower multiple of nine and eventually gets back to 9 (i'm assuming this is what Lavey is talking about). This also works with the number 3 strangely enough.

Of course, this 6-6-6 thing is a matter of perspective. Sit across a table from a friend. You write the numbers 9-9-9 nicely spaced and large on a piece of paper in front of you. You are a Satanist and 9 is your number from where you sit at the bottom end of the table. Fun fact, as I posted in the original thread about this that lexi linked: In Common Greek, the language of the New Testament, numbers were written differently. The Ancients didn't have a decimal number system. Instead, the Greeks used letters as numbers, with a special mark over them to signify that they should be taken as numbers. The number we write as "666" was actually written χξς'. (Hope that prints. It's the Greek letters chi = 600, xi = 60, stigma = 6.) Or sometimes it was just written out in full, like we would write "six hundred and sixty six".

Not three sixes in a row; three different symbols. The Ancients wouldn't have understand why we see 666 when we see three 6's. They'd say, okay, I see a six, but where's the sixty, and where's the six hundred?

I just realised that 3 doesn't always get back to itself because it has the one digit multiples 6 and 9. D'oh.

Numerology was never really than interesting. 616 OR 666. Mystical systems bother with numbers too much.

I only like numbers when they're descriptive of something about me or my life. I like 9 as the number of the Ego. Not very many other numbers though.

Last night it hit me hard. I like numbers and how i see them in life. for example, I have 25 letters in my whole name, the paper back version of the Satanic bible has the 9 Satanic Statements on page 25. The Church of Satan was founded in 1966 in S.F and later in 1969 the Satanic Bible was published.

Barry Bonds, who plays for the S.F. Giants wears the number 25 and the position he plays is LEFT field. The solidarity in the fact that Bonds became the home run king in S.F. blows me away. (right now its 6:09 PM where i live) They said the home run ball will have an asterik on it...I smiled when i saw that on a typing keyboard that the number 8 and the asterik are on the same key(enochian key number 8 speaks of the emergence of the Satanic age).

I was born at 12:45 ...1+2=3:4+5=9...3:9...3x9=27...27 divided by 3=9...2+7=9. 666...6+6+6=18...1+8=9 or 999...9+9+9=27...2+7=9

There have been so many people digging into 666 over the past 1000 years. 6 Being the number of "man" and 7 being the number of "god". 777 is the holy trinity of perfection, 666 would be the trinity of man, being uncomplete.

Or you can convert 666 to NERO. Some say the entire book for Revelation was a thinly veiled attack on Nero. I actually believe there is a whole History Channel special on it.

You can look into anything hard enough and find a number that will bring something together. There is no difference between that and playing 7 Degree's to Kevin Bacon.

I did always find it interesting that multiplying 9 by anything can always end up coming back to 9. But its more or less a party trick than any real 'occult' knowledge.

666 and 616 means the same. It was a code for the roman emperor Nero. In latin "Neron" is 616. In hebrew "Neron Kesar" and in greek "Nêrôn Kaisar" are adding up to the 666.
It is still funny that christians are afraid from a man who is so long rotten. But they are allways excited about dead guys anyway.

I think it would clear up a lot for those confused if you would share with us how you define "Satan".

The film that you're referring to is The Number 23, and the premise of the film is that every occurrence or event directly revolves around the number 23, some permutation of the number 23 or a number related to 23. This esoteric principle is known as the 23 Enigma and was made popular by Discordianism.

The 23 Enigma is neat to play around with, but that's about as far as it goes. In reality, it's about as meaningless as the parody religion that spawned it.

I would probably say the Pagans or who ever founded Christianity chose the number 666 for a specific reason.



Supposedly in the occult 6 is meant to represent man, and a number repeated 3 times is considered to be in it's Ultimate (or Complete?) form.
So the number "666" would mean: The Ultimate Man.

I like to avoid using "666" because I believe it has significance to people other than Satanists.
