Some years back I started participating in Q&A forums. These are internet forums specifically set up to post and answer specific questions, as opposed message boards or chat rooms set up for full interactive discussion and dialog. I used to post to Answerology, but now a days I stick to Yahoo Answers. I've been answering a number of questions there regarding Satanism.

Before I get into that, here's a little background info about this site. Ideally, this is how they're supposed to work:

1) Somebody posts a question.
2) Other people read the question and, each post their individual answer to that question. The answers show up under the particular question being answered.
3) Readers can give individual answers a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" rating.
4) In the end, a "Best Answer" is chosen from the lot personally by the person who posted the question. If he or she doesn't chose one, it's left up to anonymous voting.

You lose a few points when you post a question. You gain a few points when you answer a question or vote on existing answers. The more points you get, the more you can reach levels that allow you to post more questions in one day, or allow you to post more answers in one day, etc.

It's understandable why these sorts of sites are popular. There are people who are too stupid or lazy to use a search engine to find the answers they want, and expect another human to tell them. And people who fancy themselves experts on a subject get an ego boost from giving their advice to people.

I originally went to Yahoo Answers to just answer questions in the mathematics section, mainly to brush up on my teaching skills (I've been considering doing some teaching or tutoring on the side). I'm proud to say that I'm among the top 10 ranked answerers there.

But for amusement, I also like to go to the "religion & spirituality" section. Now I've been on all sorts of multi-faith forums over the years because I do sincerely like religion as a topic. I've always been fascinated by it from a sociological and cultural point of view. I can answer questions about numerous world religions. But while religious people tend to be dumb-witted in general, this particular forum is simply the bottom of the barrel. It makes The View look like an Oxford University lecture.

As you can probably imagine, more people use sites like Yahoo Answers not for knowledge, but for a bogus sense of support. They'll post a loaded, rhetorical question. Then "Best Answer" simply goes out to "Who agrees with me the most". This is especially true when it comes to the section for questions on politics, and the section for religion/spirituality questions.

Still, the Satanism questions come up. And I answer them when I see them, as do the so many Jesus freaks and teenagers who get all of their Satanism information from church propaganda and tacky horror movies. But I've been happily surprised to see lots of non-Satanists there even correctly saying "No, Satanism is NOT about devil worship or sacrificing babies, it's about...[etc.]".

On the rare occasion that a question seems sincere, I'll answer politely. But if a question is completely loaded and posted by a total moron, I don't hold back on the insults.

Here's a more recent example of a question and my answer, all spelling mistakes unaltered:

Quote:
What lies does the satanic bible say?

this
[question] is only for the ex santics [sic] who came to know christ

Quote:
None that I know of. It's a book that describes a non-theistic, carnal-based philosophy that utilizes esoteric symbolism and ritual for psychological purposes, written in plain modern English.

Unlike some other "Bibles" I could mention, it's not a re-re-re-re-translation of after-the-fact oral traditions, doesn't claim to be handed down from a supernatural being, doesn't make natural instincts out to be irrationally shameful things, and doesn't make any bogus historical claims about things like the formation of the earth or where languages come from.

It's not for everybody, but for those of us who see our personalities reflected in the philosophy, it has become a very significant book.

And "santics" isn't a word. For that matter, "Satanic" is an adjective, not a noun. After you get off daddy's computer, go grab a dictionary.

Fantastic, Bill!

I've written up Satanism posts on other general sites, and I figure, it may all just be dust in the wind, but on the other hand, you never know who you might've just educated. Provided you have the energy and the information, it never hurts to step in and write a quick, clear, courteous, and above all, accurate post.

I see. Thanks for the quick reply! smile I guess I could've looked it up myself, but I wasn't sure if it was an abbreviation, (like an "inside" thing), or a real "word". Thanks again...now I know. wink

Here's another common example. I've noticed that the more of these I answer, the more I have prepared lines ready for the predictable questions and claims that come up.

The question (or rather, 5 of them):

Quote:
Exactly what is Satanism????
What is it?? Whats the difference between a freemason and a satanist? Any famous satanists?? What do they believe??

My response to the questions and some of the bogus answers other people were giving:

Quote:
Freemasonry is a lodge, not a religion. They are no more "Satanic" than a college fraternity, the Elks Club, Knights of Columbus, or the American Legion. You can go look up a local Freemason chapter in the Yellow Pages, walk into the building, and ask more about them.

As for Satanism, well there are a number of different practices that the media and Christian zealots label with that term. But as for an actual organized religion called "Satanism" with practitioners that actually identify THEMSELVES as "Satanists", that didn't exist until the formation of the Church of Satan in the 1960s by Anton Szandor LaVey, who later wrote out the principles of the religion in "The Satanic Bible". Some people claim otherwise, but I have yet to see any historical evidence for their claims.

The Church of Satan has certainly had a few famous members: Sammy Davis Jr., Marilyn Manson, Jane Mansfield, etc. There are other famous celebrities and politicians who are Satanists, but they keep their affiliation a secret, knowing that it would be career suicide to be out-of-the-closet about it.

As far as beliefs go, Satanism is a religion of the flesh, rather than the spirit. It's a strictly non-theistic philosophy that embraces concepts such as self-importance, self-responsibility, critical thinking, justice, humor, indulgence, and host of other things that other religions have traditionally branded as "evil". We use Satan as a symbol and convenient archetype for those values.

As you can see from some of the other responses here, a lot of idiots claim to know what Satanism is without doing even a minimal amount of research on the subject first. They largely get their false information from tacky horror movies and sensationalist talk show hosts.

"Theistic Satanism" is an oxymoron. Satanism is non-theistic; we believe the whole notion of deities is an invention of the human mind. There's already a name for people who believe in an actual Devil and worship him: they're called "devil worshipers".

Some people are mentioning Aleister Crowley and Charles Manson. Neither of them ever claimed to be Satanists, and no educated person that I know of considers them to be Satanists either. Crowley established a completely different religion called Themela, and Charles Manson was just a criminally insane cult leader.

Whenever a Google search lists a result from Yahoo! Answers, I check it out, if only for the amusement of reading the poorly-written questions and answers. Of course, the same errors can lead one to despair over the state of our language. Call it "writter's disgust."

It's almost incomprehensible just how simple some of the questions are, as well as how irrelevant some of the "answers" are.

Reverend, your contributions are oases in a -- what's drier than a desert?

I agree with TrojZyr's comment about the potential for educating the right people in such an intellectually barren environment. If you didn't answer these questions, someone else, almost definitely less qualified, would.

The only point missing from your answers, in my opinion, is that santics are born, not made!

Hi Bill:

These responses are charitable.

My husband has similar patience with people, and has been able to compile books from old message board posts. It may be worth your while to archive your posts and arrange them in a similar fashion. I know that I, and probably many other Satanists, would certainly buy your works in hard copy.

I still think you are one of the most entertaining writers on this message board. I still laugh when I think about a remark you posted about "bad tasting candy" YEARS ago.

As Usual,
Sarah

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind! I'm sure I'll put out a book of essays one of these days. I've published a bunch in zines over the years (Not Like Most, The Trident, Ninth Gate, etc.) that are long out of print.

I don't recall that one, but there are other immortal Bill_M-isms that are seared into my brain.

My favorite was your solemn pronouncement condemning Cuddle Parties: "Satan represents hugs for those who deserve them!"

It is one way to kill a half hour. I get into a snit and do it rabidly for a few days and then not again for 8 or 9 months.

The stupid quotient on there is, hopefully, way above the national average.

Yep.

Yahoo! Answers seems to have a filter that keeps out the majority of intelligence, combined with some sort of hi-tech *stupid magnet* that attracts top quality "dumb".

Killer combo.

It can certainly be addictive, especially when you feel like you're on a roll. I admittedly "binge" like that from time to time, especially over in the math section. Though I've had some productive off-site talk too with some of the top-10 folks who know their stuff.

Answer forums such as Y!A seem to significantly attract the kind of people who insist on asking the nearest human being for answers before they at least try figuring it out on their own. As we say in the engineering world, "RTFM!"

The real tragedy is that yahoo.com itself IS a search engine. So there are lots of questions that could be answered with a 5 second search on the internet, but instead come from people who were either too incompetent or clueless to just scroll to the top of the page and do so. Though I think it's equally silly when somebody answers a question, and cites a rival site like Google as their source.

(Never mind searching Yahoo Answers itself to see if the same question has already been posted and answered there. For example, "Why is the sky blue?" has already been asked there literally over 3,000 times. That sure doesn't stop new people from asking, though.)

I'm reasonably certain that Yahoo Answers has a higher percentage of trolls than other answer forums, but the sheer amount of genuine stupidity is mind boggling.

Sometimes it's really hard to tell one from the other. In fact, I've never seen a forum where it was more ambiguous. For example, a new-comer who thinks he's really witty will post "Is the earth really round? I think it's flat." Then after reading all the hateful replies, he says "Hey, I was obviously kidding! What's wrong with you?" Then it has to be explained to the person that we honestly couldn't tell, because some people really DO post things that ARE that stupid, and with complete sincerity.

This is when I first heard of the term Poe's Law: "Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of Fundamentalism that SOMEONE won't mistake for the real thing." You have to lay the sarcasm on REALLY thick there to make a joke come across as a joke.

Complete bullshit. Everyone knows that rubbing cat pee on your face only cures curses thrown by old Mexican hags.

For an Italian curse like Il Maloccio, the only cure is to receive a happy ending massage from a hot Italian woman.

I am totally polite with but two members of the herd religion. My daughter and her husband. The rest, well the rest can go suck an egg as far as I'm concerned.

Back in the good old days, ferrets and other small furry, critters (Yosemite Sam would call them varmints) only carried rabies and possibly a few other minor diseases. Now it looks like they’ve whipped out the big guns. AIDS carrying ferrets are hiding under every rock, behind every tree and possibly in your grandparents basement. Please beware of the ferret menace they will be our down fall, if the chihuahuas don’t get us first.

Here are a few Satanism-unrelated ones I've answered:

Very witty responses! Thoroughly amusing.

Regarding the general issue of Satanism-related discussions on the Internet: I just caught myself paying a bit too much attention to a mildly disgruntled Church of Satan member on YouTube. He says he's been a member for 15 years, but has issues with certain aspects of the Church of Satan, all of which I find to be very misguided. Seeing that he had nearly 10,000 views for a particular video, I made a couple of comments to clear up inaccuracies.

All of this only took a few minutes of my time, but I have learned through other videos that this guy just doesn't get it. Needless to say, his viewers are usually much worse.

I usually leave these types alone, but thought that this member, who does say some of the right things, might be worth a brief exchange. As it turns out, he's just a rare type of Intellectual Black Hole.

I've learned my lesson from this rare attempt to share the facts where they're not exactly welcome.

At this point, most of the people who need to know the truth already know it. I'm glad that we have a Priesthood that takes time to handle any worthwhile issues.

I'm also glad that you're having fun with these dim bulbs. Thanks for sharing those funny exchanges, and for bringing up this topic to begin with. It's all too relevant!

I don't get the idea of a "mildly disgruntled Church of Satan member". If being a CoS member isn't pleasurable, why be one? If they have issues worth complaining about, why subject themselves to it at all? Even if they're not misguided, even if every gripe is legit, why bother unless the good outweighs the bad?

I hate that the CoS has such people in it, I'm leaving. frown

And especially the third screenshot was amusing.

Though, how is it said in English? In Slovakia, we say "laughter through tears" (relating to raised Yahoo! question, in this case).

Still, it's laughter. wink

No, it's not what I meant. smile

The meaning was, that even though one would laugh on something, it would be, in fact, not laughable but pitiful.
That is, for what the phrase laughter through tears stands.

In this case, one can laugh on stupidity of someone else, but stupidity itself is not funny but dangerous...

I'm glad, that you like the kitten-signature.

Possibly the phrase you seek is "It is too true to be funny".

This means that the situation, at first, seems comical but, if you examine it more closely, you see that there is potential for harm.

You could say that they are "Not laughing WITH you, but AT you." Though I think you mean something more along the lines of "tragically funny". I'm not sure we have an exact phrase for the idea in the English language.

Tragically funny, yes.

For the phrase Laugh at someone, it could be used, too. Depends on context.

Thank you for the ideas.

Wow, I'm surprised you guys don't know. They have a sarcasm mark, very cleverly named the SarcMark

They tossed around the idea of an upside down exclamation point, but ended up with the curly Q.

I'm also surprised Magister Ventrue hasn't created his own version of this, and added it to his sites.

Since I posted, I'll add...
To Reverend Bill_M,
This post is very funny.

It's even more pathetic when you consider that once you start to compose a post, an embedded built-in spelling checker appears. I swear, there have been more angry questions directed at "athiest" than "atheists".

I've had plenty of fun with the misspellings though. Or as some have actually called them "miss spelling". I didn't realize Tori was single.

Then there are the misspellings that a spelling checker wouldn't pick up. I somebody who asked "Should paganism be band?" I replied with "Lead guitar paint poisoning should be band. Actually, I think a band formed from all of the world's pagans would have WAY too many percussion players."

Wow, HERE'S a busy little fellow:
http://answers.yahoo.com/activity/qa?show=UW8hd9tjaa&link=question

He's asked at least 20 questions in a row (most of them the same) about Satanism's view of magic. And that's not even counting the questions that have been reported for being duplicates or rants.

Slave2Christ, eh?

That brings up some very interesting images for me indeed...

("Hurt me, Daddy! Hurt me!")

Has anyone asked him what his REAL question and/or opinion is? He clearly seems fixated on the subject, but I can't tell if he's grinding an axe, or getting all excited about ritual, or oscillating between the two.

Funny thing is some of the questions I have read so far are many of the same kind that I get quite often over the years from people new to Satanism.

It's nearly impossible to tell these days, especially on forums like Yahoo Answers. As I mentioned before, there's the whole "Poe's Law" in action. But it wasn't even a week ago that this guy had no clue what Satanism was about, that somebody else told him that it was non-theistic, and now suddenly he's quoting from the Satanic Bible. I'm guessing he just grabbed whatever illegal electronic copy he could find.

I suspect it's the same old game of "If I find a loophole that nobody answers, then I win!" You know, the compulsive debating type. Only this one is even more stupid, and on so many levels.

Users can, however, report questions for being "rants". coopdevil

I see why there is thread about this! I recently started to check out the religious section of Yahoo Answers and Satanism is brought up a lot and there is only one or two real Satanists that seem to give answers sometimes. The rest of the answers are from a bunch of goofs from that silly J.O.S cult giving long answers and links to their brand of so-called Satanism and saying that LaVayan Satanists are not the real thing and how we are atheists acting like clowns and insulting the Lord and Master and all kind of other crap. And saying that we will regret this soon and on and on.

If the people asking serious questions about Satanism are dumb enough to believe all the answers they get as being true then they get what they deserve I guess, but wow.

I downloaded the thing shown in the post following yours. By typing it in a post as described (thus ) it shows as I am typing. But, when I post it, you see what shows up online.
