I was joking in my previous answer…kind of. I have been the shipper for a small research facility for about 15 years now. My wife makes more than twice the salary as I. I did train for a profession, and, after a short while I came into my own and realized that I had made a terrible mistake. I cannot express how free and happy I feel doing manual labor. My health has improved since taking this job, as has my stress level. I made a decision to go for personal happiness instead of looking successful. This is a mutual decision between my wife and I. She tends to be a workaholic, and is task oriented. After a short while in any job, she begins to look for the next step. She has made the position of director. She also lives with a lot of stress. I am not task oriented. I have been described as someone who is not detail oriented, and often “has his head in the clouds”. I think this is accurate. Some people’s goals are money, security and future advancement. Mine is being happy and left alone. I am fortunate that I have a job which gives me a lot of autonomy. I am able to chase my whims. It helps that I do my job well, and am trusted, hence left alone. It is not a secret to many on this forum that I used to be a United Methodist minister. The only way I would be able to maintain my present lifestyle is to have a mate who is willing to shoulder the greater financial responsibility. In return, she has someone who has a meal waiting for her every night, when she comes home. She also has someone who is not burdened with residual stress from work, and can give his undivided attention to her when she needs to get things off her chest. I was also a more “hands on” father than some, because I do not have a 50-60 hour work week. I, on the other hand, have the comfort of my routine, and a reasonable expectation of being in the same job until retirement. Some may find that dull.

Personal happiness is success.

Let's see... In the past, I've worked at a quarry for two years, a custom t-shirt store, a few record stores (remember those?), did telemarketing for a spell, worked at a mortgage company for six whole days, plus earned money at almost every fast food place imaginable. I've managed to find employment as a print journalist for the past 11 years. I write about 300 articles a year. I also do a little bit of work as a publicist-for-hire and publish my own books now and then. I've worked from home since the fall of 2009, and pretty much set my own hours. I also travel about a month out of the year to hunt down stories. My income has its ups and downs, but I love being able to create something on a computer screen, see it published and use the money earned from that work to feed my family. Not a bad way to live.

I did train for a profession, and, after a short while I came into my own and realized that I had made a terrible mistake. That's actually one of the most intelligent things you can do. There are a lot of people out there struggling along, being miserable, because of the "I was trained for this, so I gotta stick with it" logical fallacy. People who don't know me well often tell me "but you went to business school, so why aren't you a manager instead of doing all the nerdy stuff" - but I really like the nerdy stuff, and I don't like dealing with people And I think that your children will appreciate you being a "hands on" dad much more than a fancy title when it really comes down to it.

This sounds a bit like our family life here, my husband also have a wonderful dinner waiting for him when he comes home from another hard working day at the university. I just love cooking, I love preparing dinner, and I love shopping for food in many different places to find special food. The passion I have for food is the same passion I have for my art, I guess it's the lioness in me

Ok, I'm going to be serious about this now.
I've worked as a grocery clerk, cantine chef and dishwasher, construction worker, builder, house painter, waiter, bartender, porn website admin, porn movie director and cameraman, telemarketer, fisherman, lumberjack, and I'm currently working in the wine and liquor trade and studying to become a teacher.

I started working when I was 14 and have been on and off since. I was a dishwasher, a dishwasher, a dishwasher, a dishwasher and another dishwasher. It sounds like bitch work, and kind of is, but I don't mind it. Lots of instant gratification. You take a dirty dish, and clean it. Now you have a clean dish. That works very well for me.
Currently I am training to be a captioning assistant at Captel. It's pretty easy once you get past the near instant mimicry. They start talking and once they get out the first word or two, you start saying exactly what they say with no pause. We use voice recognition software and that's a little tricky to master, but there is two weeks of training before you get to live calls. The pay is awesome for training alone, much less when you get hired. Especially given the economy. I'm really looking forward to this job.

I don't pay my bills. I glare at them until they pay themselves. The job I've held the longest was working at a theater as a supervisor. I really liked that job a lot. Got a taste of management at the age of 18 and pity all who have to work like that every day. I know it's common to bitch about management, but to their credit if you're trying to run a business and you don't come across as a bitch/asshole you're probably doing your job wrong. Other than all the paperwork bullshit I had to do I very much liked being a part of that work environment; it was like having another family. Now I just work and stuff. If I was to reveal what I do for a living now I would be totally uncool, and being cool is what I always aspire to be.
