This entry has been updated with new photos and information.

I had the tremendous pleasure of visiting the Countway Medical Library in Boston a couple of weeks ago to peruse their copy of LA FORME HUMAINE - one of the rarest books from The Compleat Witch's bibliography, and only one of two known copies at libraries in the United States. I have updated the blog with a handful of photos, as well as the Table of Contents and dimensions (an approximation, since I neglected to bring a tape measure).

It was a wonderful experience holding and looking through something that is so scarce and obscure, and in such an exclusive environment. Many thanks to the library and its staff.

Be sure to visit the updated blog for more photos!

Here's a video I put together to showcase a handful of titles; with a good response, I'll make more.

I've been following this since the beginning, it was very useful to me because I can't acquire most of the titles and I'm not inclined towards downloading pirated content, so it is nice that some of the titles are available online.

I imagine that even non-Satanists can enjoy this project.

Well done Reverend CoffinRust!

You have captured some key points as to why the bibliography is so important to pursue!

You had me at Funeral Customs. grin

That was excellent. I fell in love with this entire project as a whole from the get-go. The "curious bit of niche bibliomania" found a very interested audience in me! The comprehensive, rather delicate dissection of an often-overlooked and yet crucial part of one of the most invaluable books in the lexicon is the very essence of a kind of syntopical total immersion Deep Satanism. It is a meticulous and measured exploration of all of those delicious tangents I carefully transcribed in ze journal so many years ago in the hopes of getting back to them eventually.

Now I was half-resigned to Eventually being a myth, one of those delusions thunked up by pathological procrastinators or afterlifers or one of the lies the less-crazy tell themselves to ease the pain of Not Finishing the To-Dos. But here it is, Eventually, staring me in the face and I get to go back to my practically illegible, painfully awkward longhand list on that slightly faded college ruled paper and... Oh! It's sooo cool.

Slightly aside: I love the very specific thematic boundaries. So many times I run across people who consider themselves collectors but, when asked about their collection, what they have sounds more like a storage unit. Irritatingly haphazard. Like they just couldn't figure out how to go to a library. There's no rhyme nor reason, no organization, no method to the madness, no madness to the method. No character to it, no personality.

I also love the celebration of books. Book-books. Boooooooks. In addition to the meat of each, I love the attention to all the other details. The aesthetics. That's something that not everyone appreciates. The heft, the tactility, the artwork and binding and typography. There's a place for the digital plastic "e" hyphenated word, like when you're getting carpal tunnel trying to slog through that ten pound tome, but it's not a world that us bibliomisfits truly feel at home in. It lacks an element of beauty and intimacy. We need our time with the thing itself. Not just to read it but see it, feel it, smell it, listen to it through the pads of our fingertips. Sit with it like an old friend.

And there's always something a little softly poignant, a little bittersweet about that. I mean, you can't really escape the fact that no matter how well we tend to them books are creatures with a finite lifespan. So there is this very real, very precious, very elegant sense of preservation to the Compleat Witch Bibliography blog that I think deserves a standing ovation.

...But I do hope a compendium of all of the work put forth by everyone involved is published in hard, physical format some day. Because in all unblinking, irony-free, seriousness a book about books -- not just any books, mind you, but these books -- would be awesome in every sense of the word.

And this video is killer. It's got the class and kind of reservation that comes with this kind of cataloging but also a big double shot of cheekiness, a real toast to LaVey's signature hepcat arch wit. It probably goes without saying but I totally dig the dervish, it's perfect. And, you know, at first I thought the quotes were flashing too fast (I'm a slow reader) but I think I prefer it that way because it's such a tease! Talk about showin' a little leg. grin coopdevil

All that to say, Bravo! I can't wait for more! tiki tiki tiki

Thank you all!

And Shade, thank you so much for the eloquent review; you've captured the zeal of the Satanic bibliophile beautifully!

And you're absolutely right about the text moving a bit too fast - that's something I'm going to be more mindful of next time!
