Looks like a nice family pet.

But I prefer something more traditional like a dog or a cat. smile

Looks like the Doktor's five point program is becoming more and more of a reality, and less of a dream.

This is an internet connected device, and therefore hackable.
And it takes photos and videos. And talks.
What could possibly go wrong?
I see everything from minor mischief to serious blackmail in the pipeline.

I don't know if I would call this an artificial human companion. It sure doesn't look human. It's just a Bluetooth speaker with extra features.

Of course, you also prefer Christianity over Satanism.

The robotics industry has been making all kinds of stuff for generations, but an affordable and interactive model like this could be a huge step in helping robotics become a more acceptable thing.

Exactly.

Robotics in Japan has been striving to make their robots "human-compatible" yet the JIBO concept offers a direct example of how relatively easy it is to create a "Jeeves" butler-type helper without having to duplicate a humanoid structure.

Quite brilliant in conception! Just take voice and facial elements with a tilting, revolving "head" and we all "anthropomize" it! grin

Interesting. I'm looking for something a little bit more "hands on" that can help me and my wife with stuff around the house or while out and about. Eventually, it is my hope that ASIMO will be brought to mass market.

For those of you who had not yet heard of ASIMO and would like to see it in actual demonstration, if you're in the Southern California area and visiting Disneyland, you can see it for yourself in the "Innoventions" attraction in Tomorrowland. (The older Disneyland buffs among us will recognize that building as the one that used to host "America Sings.")

Another glorified Furby...

I don't see any particular innovation in this. It's a bunch of applications that are already commonplace in mobile devices, bundled together into an interactive talk-back package whose novelty factor will wear out in a couple of weeks. I can fabricate a "robot" twice as useful as this with a roomba vacuum cleaner, my old android phone and some duct tape.

To qualify as a "robot" you have to give me something that actually walks around and has at least some object-handling capability.

I can see a new entrepreneurial space adventure for The Pig based on this idea!

The Pig: "You call that a 'robot'?"
Robotics CEO: "Why yes. We do!"
The Pig: "I can fabricate a "robot" twice as useful as this with a roomba vacuum cleaner, my old android phone and some duct tape."
Robotics CEO: "You're HIRED!"

grin

First we get hooked on the idea, then they spring on us with the much higher priced mobile units. As mr. Smith from The Matrix said, "Not impossible -- inevitable".
