I have searched the FAQs, user guide and question forum, but can't seem to find the answer.
I understand that a display name change requires admin approval - but do I need to obtain this first, or will a request be automatically generated if I try to change it in my profile?
(I was trying to request the approval when I found the Contact Us link malfunction.)

Yes.

It will be changed as soon as the Moderator gets to it. Provided that the new name don't violate any board rules.
