I interpret it as the meaning you originally he took; that he was taking on a father figure role himself.
I've never heard the phrase "take back" to mean stopping using something because that thing is obsolete, or to make something obsolete.
It would be very strange language to use like that and doesn't make sense in that meaning in context either.
